Tourist hut (1831 m)

Gaustatoppen, Norway

Diploma project / AHO, spring 2023

This thesis responds to the Norwegian Trekking Association’s (DNT) expressed need to expand and refurbish their tourist hut at Gaustatoppen, a mountain in Norway. The hut experiences a continuously increasing number of visitors. The thesis addresses the challenges of constructing in highly weather-exposed areas and upgrading and expanding an existing building within a historically significant site. The design proposal ties to a broader discussion on managing tourists in vulnerable mountain regions.

The proposed extension of the cabin is compact and fits within the existing natural stone walls, enhancing the building's functionality without expanding its footprint in the landscape. The goal is for the hut to serve as a social meeting point for mountain enthusiasts, providing a warm and sheltered interior and a robust exterior capable of enduring the year-round cycles in the open and exposed mountain landscape.

Neighbourhood house

Ghent, Belgium

Master course: The Gathering / KU Leuven, autumn 2021

The city municipality of Ghent in Belgium is engaged in a comprehensive urban development strategy. Among other initiatives, vacant industrial buildings are repurposed to create meeting points within densely populated areas. This project centres around the remains of a former laundry complex constructed in 1953, currently standing vacant. The project proposes converting the underused building into a neighbourhood house and a generous ”third space” as part of this strategy.

The proposal was developed using Leporello as a process tool and can be unfolded to 56 pages. The project demonstrates how strategic interventions within the building's concrete structure can facilitate social activities and highlight and reveal architectural qualities previously hidden.

Studio ifBuilt

Oslo, Norway

Self-programmed master course / AHO, spring 2021

A self-programmed course investigating contemporary architectural production and its bureaucracy. We (eight students) collaboratively designed three typical projects:

01. Urban loft conversion
02. Renovation of a detached house
03. New semi-detached house

The course resulted in a 623-page book containing working drawings, essays, transcripts of lectures and meetings, templates, and research. The book represents a reflection on designing a built project, developing an architectural office and creating an academic course.

Metro station
+ Recycle station

Oslo, Norway

Second-year course / AHO, spring 2018

The project is a proposal for a new metro station in a public park in Oslo. Glass-cladded steel boxes connect the ground and underground levels and carry people and light between the levels.

The station is constructed using a cut-and-cover method, and the sheet pile wall defines the outer perimeter of the project. The light boxes function as recognisable navigation elements and illuminate the station with a mix of daylight and artificial light, making the travel experience more pleasant.
