Arkitekt MNALTourist hut (1831 m)
Gaustatoppen, Norway
Diploma project / AHO, spring 2023
This thesis responds to the Norwegian Trekking Association’s (DNT) expressed need to expand and refurbish their tourist hut at Gaustatoppen, a mountain in Norway. The hut experiences a continuously increasing number of visitors. The thesis addresses the challenges of constructing in highly weather-exposed areas and upgrading and expanding an existing building within a historically significant site. The design proposal ties to a broader discussion on managing tourists in vulnerable mountain regions.
The proposed extension of the cabin is compact and fits within the existing natural stone walls, enhancing the building's functionality without expanding its footprint in the landscape. The goal is for the hut to serve as a social meeting point for mountain enthusiasts, providing a warm and sheltered interior and a robust exterior capable of enduring the year-round cycles in the open and exposed mountain landscape.
